10 Phrases To Avoid in Your Freelance Life

Just to share you a good article - 10 Phrases Every Freelancer Should Kick-Out of Their Vocabulary by Shama Hyder. Photos by scienceyear.com and onlinetutoringworld.com.

As a freelancer, you must know a way to maintain your brand. Your freelance rate is very much depends on your brand instead of your skill. To maintain your brand, you must know what to avoid when branding your self. Here is the 10 phrases you should always keep in mind during the conversation with your client. Don’t let your words damage your brand.

“I can do it for cheaper” — If you could do it for cheaper, why did you quote me a higher price in the first place?

If you think your work is really good and have the confidence, do not lower your prices, it may backfire. I never believe in price war but quality. Always bid a freelance job based on the value behind your skill and quality of work.

“I am not the best…” — You may not be the best, but this isn’t exactly awe-inspiring for a client to hear, is it?

Though it is not really a good idea to show off or boast around. Do not undervalue your skills in such extent that the client himself looses confidence on you. It creates a negative image to the client who always look for the BEST to do their project.

“Umm…uh..” — Okay, it’s not exactly a phrase, but umms and uhs can really kill a conversation.

Do not project any trace of stress at any stage of the conversation with your client. This definitely puts the client off. Try to focus on whatever he has to say, and he will sense the professionalism and reliability in you.

“This is a side-gig” — And it may be a side gig, but don’t share unless you plan on keeping it a side gig forever.

Leave out this detail if you plan to make your freelance work as a means of living.

image“I work in my pajamas ” – This sounds like it should make the client envious, but it doesn’t always work that way.

When dealing with clients, do not be unprofessional in appearance, even though the client may not care, but you never know. So best is to take no chance.

“I have no idea” — There will be many times when you have “no idea.” This phrase isn’t necessarily bad, as long as it doesn’t stop there.

When you are running out of idea or have no idea at all, don’t readily admit. Be positive. The right phrase should be “I’ll find one”.

“My prices are flexible” - This ties in with number one. Why are your prices flexible?

Do not juggle your prices to much, that send a wrong signal to the client. If you believe that your work is good enough to be entitled for a higher payment, then stick to it.

“F***, D***, S***”- Some freelancers tend to be the creative types who don’t like to censor their language for anyone.

Do not use foul or vulgar words in front of client even if you are quite sure that the client doesn’t really care about this. But still to keep the atmosphere healthy and professional. Do not use these words at all.

“What did you say? I missed that” - Develop your listening skills.

Your clients will surely feel disturbed if he has to repeat his words for no reason, no one actually likes this thing. Concentrate hard on what the client has to say. If you are weak in listening, get help from a voice recorder.

image “I partied way too hard last night”- …and now I am going to start work on your thousand dollar project.

If you really show this kind of behavior, client will surely loose faith upon you. Do not mix your personal life with professional life.

Every freelancer should exclude these phrases and attitudes from their work spectrum.
